Le réchauffement climatique influence la production primaire de l’océan Arctique. À l’échelle pan-Arctique un record de température moyenne de surface a été atteint en 2007. Celui-ci a contribué au minimum de couvert de glace observé cette même année. Dans cette étude, nous avons utilisé les données d’un modèle tridimensionnel couplé physique-biologie pour évaluer l’impact d’un tel minimum sur la production primaire au cours de la décennie 2000-2009 à l’échelle pan-Arctique et régionale (mer de Barents et mer de Chukchi). À l’échelle pan-Arctique, la réduction du couvert de glace en 2007 a contribué à l’augmentation de la production primaire. Néanmoins, des différences apparaissent entre les deux mers côtières. En 2007, la production primaire en mer de Chukchi atteint un maximum sur la décennie. En mer de Barents, partiellement libre de glace à l’année, la production primaire montre une augmentation plus modérée. Ces diffé- rences sont liées aux caractéristiques physiques de chaque mer principalement le couvert glaciel en mer de Chukchi mais aussi l’apport de nutriments dissous depuis l’océan Atlantique Nord en mer de Barents. À l’échelle pan-Arctique, l’augmentation de la production primaire observée dans le modèle est liée à la plus grande exposition à la lumière par unité de surface, associée à la fonte des glaces.

Climate induced changes in sea ice cover, stratifica- tion/mixing and Atlantic Water inflow are decisive for the future Barents Sea (BS) primary production (PP). Physics and PP of the BS were investigated through the physically-biologically coupled SINMOD model with a 20 km grid size. In order to compare current to future levels and trends during the 21st century, two climate simula- tions were applied: a hindcast scenario based on atmo- spheric reanalysis from the ECMWF for the years 1979- 2013 and a climate change scenario based on a regional downscaling of the coupled ECHAM5/MPIO model from the Max Planck Institute forced by the IPCC SRES A1B emission scenario for the years 2001-2099.
In the future, the simulated ocean warming strengthens the summer thermal stratification in the south-western BS. The sea ice cover decreases during the 21st century. Consistent ice-free summers are reached around 2025 in the eastern BS and around 2060 in the northern BS. There, ice-driven conditions shift to permanently ice-free conditions. At the same time, surface nitrate (NO3) con- centrations in April decline in the BS. Despite decreasing surface NO3 concentrations, the PP in the northern BS is unchanged during the 21st century due to increased radiation caused by sea ice loss. Also, it results in ear- lier production peaks in this domain. Elsewhere, the PP decreases due to the decline of NO3 concentrations in surface water. Low NO3 concentration conditions arise earlier in the growth season.
